"I felt valued, while at the same time I was expected to contribute back to the group." - Camper

Technical Theatre 2012

Practice your skills with expert instruction. Tour a play to outdoor venues. Experience nature - and theatre - in a whole new way.

TPE's program in technical theatre puts you in the workshop side-by-side with professional designers and craftspeople. Work as part of a small crew to create sets, props and costumes for up to four shows in a single four-week session. Campers can concentrate on the scene shop, costume shop or learn the elements of stage management. Technical campers receive individual, hands-on training in all aspects of construction and production for outdoor theatre.

Once the work in the shops is done, you go on tour accompanying one of the ensembles. Tech campers aren't just roadies; they become valued members of the ensemble, sharing equally in the responsibilities and rewards of the tour while learning all the skills of running a touring outdoor show. Depending on which ensemble you register to tech for, your tour will look like this:

  • The High School Ensemble goes on a three-day tour to Shenandoah National Park, hiking, camping and swimming. Great for campers focusing on stage management, set and/or costumes. No interview necessary.
  • Tuition: $2,050 ($2,000 if registering before March 1st)
    Session Length: 4 weeks
First Session: June 25 - July 20, on tour July 18 - 20 (Camp is in session July 4th)
    Second Session : July 23 - August 17, on tour August 15 - 17
***PLEASE NOTE: The set construction focus is not available in the second session. Tech campers enrolled in this session must focus on the costume shop or stage management.***

  • The Commedia Troupe tours for 9 days, going to state parks, Colonial Williamsburg and points beyond, stopping at farms, woods and rivers for camping, hiking and rafting. This is a great tour for a camper interested in costumes or stage management.
