Traveling Players Ensemble, Inc. has a camp for dedicated teens (ages 10-18) to perform classical texts in outdoor amphitheaters. Selected as a "Summer School in the Arts" by the NEA, Traveling Players Ensemble's camp provides intensive theatre training to small troupes of actors, culminating in backpacking trips to perform their show, giving teens and pre-teens the experience of wandering entertainers who carry dinner, tent and props all in their trusty pack. TPE has performed at The Kennedy Center's Millennium Stage, Wolf Trap's International Children's Festival and Colonial Williamsburg.

TPE has a transportation system and performance tours, so some positions will require the employee to acquire a commercial driver's license (CDL). Training for CDL is provided. Compensation for CDL drivers will increase pay by $175/week. All applicants are eligible (above the age of 21).

  • Camp dates are June 25 to August 17, Monday through Friday, with campouts every Thursday. Orientation runs June 18 to June 22 and strike is on August 18 (both are mandatory). Traveling Troupe runs until August 11; Commedia Troupe runs until August 25.
  • TPE is in residence at The Madeira School in McLean, VA. Transportation is provided from DC-metro area (space permitting). Staff housing is not included or provided by TPE.
  • TPE provides training in First Aid, CPR, low ropes safety, Leave No Trace practices and CDL.
  • TPE can supervise your work for internship or college credit.

Seasonal Employment 2012

Directors | Costume Shop | Scene Shop | Assistant Directors | Assistant Counselors

Director (2 openings): directs the High School Ensemble's production of The Tempest or the Middle School Ensemble's production of Scapin by Moliere. Director serves as most senior faculty member of small ensemble of 13 performers, supported by professional designers and a stage manager/acting coach. The High School Ensemble will tour to Skyland Amphitheater to perform, backpacking off the Appalachian Trail.

Ideal candidate will have a graduate degree, training in Shakespeare/Commedia dell'Arte, experience directing students (ages 10-14 or 13-18), a strong belief in the power of the ensemble, and a relish for working outdoors. $375-$475/week base salary.

Short Term Director (1 opening): directs a two week middle school play-creating program based on Greek myth. Director serves as most senior faculty member of small ensemble of 13 performers. Supported by two Assistant Directors.

Ideal candidate will have a graduate degree, training in devised work, experience directing students (ages 9-13); familiarity with Greek mythology a plus, a strong belief in the power of the ensemble, and a relish for working outdoors. $375-$475/week base salary.

Assistant Head of Costume Shop: works with professional designers to create costumes for touring productions of As You Like It, The Tempest, Scapin, Blue Monster and a Commedia dell'Arte play, while training a small crew of students to assist you. Good sewing skills are essential; teaching experience a plus. $230-$300/week for base salary.

Assistant Head of Scene & Props Shop/Assistant Director & Counselor: works with professional designers to create sets/props for touring productions of As You Like It, The Tempest, Scapin, Blue Monster and a Commedia dell'Arte play, while training a small crew of students to assist you. Also works for two weeks as assistant director for the Greek myth Playmaking production with 9-13 year olds. Good construction and safety skills are essential; teaching, directing and counseling experience a plus. $230-$300/week base salary.

Theatre Teachers & Counselor (5 openings): functions as assistant director/acting coach for one show (As You Like It, The Tempest, Scapin, Blue Monster and a Commedia dell'Arte play) and teaches classes in area of specialty. Ideal candidate will have BA or MFA, training in Shakespeare and/or Commedia dell'Arte, experience teaching acting to students (ages 10-14 or 13-18), a strong belief in the power of the ensemble, and a relish for working outdoors. Experience with ensemble-building, low ropes, or Leave No Trace camping skills a plus. $230-$325/week base salary.

  • Voice Teacher (1 opening): assists with As You Like It. Experience with Shakespeare, vocal technique and music a necessity; experience with camping and high school actors a plus. Please note: program ends August 11.
  • Shakespeare Text Teacher (1 opening): assists with The Tempest. Experience with Shakespeare a necessity; experience with camping, voice, and high school actors a plus.
  • Acting Technique Teacher (1 opening): assists with Scapin. Experience with classical theatre, voice, stage combat and middle schoolers a plus.
  • Physical Theatre Teacher (1 opening): assists with the Commedia Troupe, as well as Blue Monster. Experience with stage combat, circus skills, acrobatics and middle and/or high school actors a plus. Please note: program ends August 24.
  • Improvisation Teacher (1 opening): assists with the Commedia Troupe, as well as Blue Monster. Experience with improvisation, playwriting and middle and/or high school actors a plus. Please note: program ends August 24.

Assistant Counselors: are placed throughout camp as interns to be mentored in a specific area of theatre training and child care. ACs could function as the assistant stage manager for Middle School Ensemble's production of Scapin or for the High School production of The Tempest. ACs also function as assistant teachers of classes in acting, text, improvisation, physical theatre and voice. ACs assist senior faculty during campouts, teaches outdoor skills (pitching tents and cooking outdoors) as well as with Leave No Trace (LNT) ethics. ACs could also be placed in the costume or scene shops, where they would learn technical skills, or in the camp office, where they would assist in the daily management of camp and communications. Preference goes to applicants who were previously enrolled in a Traveling Players program. Applications accepted from graduating high school seniors. Experience in directing, teaching, child care, costumes, scene shop or office work a plus. Compensation: $80-$100/week base salary.

Internship Opportunities

Development/Marketing Intern: assists managing director and artistic director in preparing grants, donor relations, organizing fundraisers, placing ads, writing press releases and reviewing marketing plan and presenting recommendations. 

Program Manager Intern: assists managing director and artistic director by serving as registrar for arts education programs, human resources for summer personnel and assisting in marketing program through by responding to inquires and attending publicity events. 

Finance Intern: assists managing director and artistic director by submitting payroll, bookkeeping in QuickBooks, managing accounts payable, re-organizing list of accounts in QuickBooks to more seamlessly transfer into documents needed for most grants applications, analyzing fiscal health of organization and presenting recommendations.

Commitment: 2-3 days/week (24 hours max/week); occasional evening or weekend hours.  Ideal candidate will be an arts management student; detail-oriented, highly organized, able to multi-task, initiate and collaborate; possess strong communication skills; have some experience in specific field and have a reliable vehicle (no public transportation available). 

Compensation: Unpaid; however, TPE can supervise your work for internship or college credit.  TPE is a growing organization and internships can lead to future employment (we've hired interns before!)
